Senior Optical Engineer

Role Summary

The Optics Engineer is responsible for designing the camera products. This includes development of the design specifications of lenses and imagers for automotive camera products.

Key Responsibilities

• Development (design, implement, test and debug) of automotive camera optical systems
• Evaluate CMOS imager chips
• Tune CMOS cameras by changing imager register settings
• Work with key suppliers to develop camera multi-element lenses optimized for automotive near and far field applications
• Design camera system level specification
• Design camera test specifications
• Interface with manufacturing to ensure proper assembly and calibration
• Interface with cross functional engineering to ensure the camera is integrated seamlessly into the ECU design
• Perform work assignments as a highly competent optics engineer, requiring independent design, implementation and testing of the optics components
• Work assignments primarily involve intermediate through advanced level work, moving toward complete technical competency and mastery of the field

Key Qualifications/Requirements

• Experience with specifying or designing lenses for vision camera.  Experience with automotive camera lens design is a plus.
• Knowledge of CMOS imager characteristics and applications. Experience with tuning CMOS camera performance by way of imager register settings.
• Experience with vision camera system level specification, design, and testing. Understanding of vision system design trade-offs and performance-cost balance.
• Cross-discipline technical skills that are related to cameras. Understanding of camera mechanical design and packaging, electrical design, software and their impacts on optical performance.
• Experience with high volume, low cost digital camera design and manufacturing.
• Familiarity of automotive OEM camera specifications, and environmental and durability requirement specifications for automotive electronics modules.
• Demonstrated innovation track record through patents, publications and products brought into the market.
• Demonstrated strong problem-solving skills and getting things done efficiently.
• Self-motivated. Thrives on bringing structure to a highly unstructured task. Ability to see the technical direction long before others can and guides a team towards it.
• Expert communication skills. Effectively communicates with team members in a cross-functional, cross-discipline organization, as well as with customers, in both oral and written means.
• Experience with conducting optics lab experiments and optical-mechanical setup.

Additional Information

• Master’s degree in applied physics, optical engineering, electrical engineering or related fields
• 4-8 years’ relevant experience regarding the responsibility/activities (listed above) in serial development.
